Thread: Earth Quake In Turkey

Terrible terrible news - thoughts are with those that lost their lives and their families :o(

A strong earthquake has struck eastern Turkey, killing at least 51 people, officials have said.

The 6.0-magnitude quake, centred on the village of Basyurt in Elazig province, struck at 0432 (0232 GMT). It has been followed by more than 30 aftershocks.

Elazig Governor Muammer Erol said the majority of deaths had occurred in the nearby villages of Okcular, Yukari Kanatli and Kayali.

Rescue teams have been deployed to find survivors trapped under rubble.

Mr Erol said many people in the affected villages lived in mud-brick homes built on hillsides, which were especially prone to collapse.

"Villages consisting mainly of mud-brick houses have been damaged, but we have minimal damage such as cracks in buildings made of cement or stone," he told CNN Turk television.

Yeah I heard it on the news !!! Terrible !!! Lots of people died :( My thoughts are with all the families !!!
Now I'm really getting nervous about an earthquake in Istanbul :(

ahh i was in an earthquake in marmaris when i was 10, and that one i think was 5.6 or something? maybe someone from marmaris or someone there in that earthquake can tell me if im right, its scary to think that a one of 6.0 can be so destructive and fatal!! and that isnt much higher than the one i was in!! scary stuff.

Could be right Rochelle.. Last 3 years ive felt many earthquakes over here.. Last one was in Greece at Rhodos and pretty good felt here in Marmaris too..

Just heard on the news that there are already 95 after shcoks in Elazig, strongest was even 5.1..

yeah mine was 11 years ago, i was 10 and can remember people sleeping on sunbeds outside, turkish families on green grass with little wireless tv's, people had jumped from balconys because they were scared and i think them cases were the only people that were injured. romance hotel had alot of glass on the entrance and i think some had smashed. i remember the balcony doors shaking and the ****l headboards on the beds shaking on the walls in the apartments!! scary shit for a 10 yearold.
